The Sunnyside Arms Gazette's Over Easy column is taken over today by our head-in-the-clouds, mystery loving, BETSYTalks-giving, quirky and sluethy, on-the-fly event planning, resident specialist of knowing about all things creative, the one and only Betsy Ross!

Hola Amigos and Followers!

It’s me! Betsy Ross! I am coming to you via the interwebs again to talk to you about our Cinco de Mayo plans here at Sunnyside Arms! Can you see me? I am wearing my specially-crafted Cinco de Mayo celebration hat. Genevieve DuVoo helped me make it. She is an artist, you know. Yes, those are real tacos on there. And limes.

Even thought we are living in quarantine-type conditions here due to Covid-19, with plenty of games planned, decorations created, food prepared, and historically correct facts ready to be shared, this Cinco de Mayo at Sunnyside Arms is going to be quite the fiesta pre siesta!

The First Annual Mystery Mayo Challenge

Miss Daphne's Mayo Or Aioli, I Can't Or Won't Tell

I have to confess, I’m most excited for the last event of the night, The First Annual Mystery Mayo Challenge! It was my idea! Miss Daphne and I have been mixing up batches of mayonnaise, aioli, vegan mayo, and even a non-branded-Miracle Whip-like version of this amazing condiment that we are calling malaise (hahaha), since last week. For the Challenge, the contestants will be given samples of our specially-concocted condiments and they will have to correctly guess what they are tasting while safely spaced out around the dining hall wearing blind folds. Their biggest challenge will be distinguishing between those four recipe variations. Or, will it be writing down their answers while blindfolded? No, definitely the tasting itself. I still can’t tell the difference!

Whichever contestant gets the most correct guesses, gets to keep all the mayo used in the Challenge! I could not think of a more thrilling and fulfilling prize. I. Am. So. Excited. I AM!

In Honor Of Puebla, Tacos, and Mayo

I am even dedicating my next BETSYTalk, Cinco de Mayo Means, to educating and informing everyone about Cinco de Mayo! For the educational part, I will be talking about the history of the Battle of Puebla...in the state of Puebla…in the country of Mexico. For those of you who don’t think you are familiar with the Battle of Puebla, I’m sure you actually are, because it’s also known as Cinco de Mayo! Get it? Turns out it's not a holiday meant for celebrating tacos and mayo after all. (I know! I was shocked too!). But, don’t be too disappointed! I have added an informational section to my talk where I’ll cover the difference between mayo and aioli as well as how you can make them taste good on tacos. [Spoiler Alert: The informational section of this BETSYTalk MAY provide helpful hints for tonight’s Mystery Mayo Challenge.] So come learn about the real meaning of Cinco de Mayo with me on MAY 5, 2020 at 2 p.m. on the Book of Faces LIVE. I will be there. Will you?

An Extra Special Taco Tuesday

Cinco De Mayo Is Taco Tuesday In 2020

This year is particularly special because (virtual drum roll please!)…Cinco de Mayo falls on a Taco Tuesday! That means we get to eat tacos here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I could not be more excited! Everything about tacos is delicious—except fish tacos, I prefer the fish stay in the water, they can’t breathe on land.

Miss Daphne's Riega Organic Taco Seasoning No. 4, Cilantro & Mystery Spices

Miss Daphne is really stepping it up with her taco offerings this week in honor of the holiday. She has at least two different taco options on the menu for each meal so far. I’d share the details, but, while she’ll talk about fruit, veggies, and meat ‘til the lights go out, she doesn’t like to divulge her spice mixes. She calls them “hers” though I don’t know that Riega Organic Taco Seasoning No. 4 really is “hers” other than in the sense that she bought it in bulk on Amazon.com with her own credit card. Goodness knows what all else she uses! But, I’ll save that mystery for another time.

Covid-19 Considerations Continue At Sunnyside Arms

Face Mask With Removable Food Flap Prototype
Face Mask With Removable Food Flap Prototype

Rest assured that even as we prepare to celebrate Cinco de Mayo here at Sunnyside Arms, we are following protocol for Covid-19. Agnes and John are seeing to that! I am doing my part by providing handmade face masks for all of those residents attending the festivities. I made 400 which I hope is enough. The masks come with a removable mouth flap so you can eat your taco breakfast, lunch, and dinner with others at a socially safe distance.

I have even separated the seats and tables in the dining area to meet John’s requested standard of keeping a 10-foot distance between residents, and I also posted signs with added instructions and diagrams. The instructions and diagrams are mostly showing how to find my favorite flowers in the backyard garden, so hopefully everyone will find them as useful as I do.

Mariachi Magic Supplied & Delivered

Mariachi Band

I almost forgot to tell you! I have two mariachi bands coming here to play music all day, and I do mean all day, 7am- 7pm! The two bands will rotate playing in the dining area (which both were pleased to hear), however, due to Covid-19 protocol, they will be performing in supply closets on opposite ends of the main floor and their performances will be shared with the residents in the dining area via Zoom with additional boost to the sound system courtesty of our own Mr. Hawker, musician and former soundman for the band, Reelee-Smooth. I have no idea if the system actually works, but it should. I think it should, it probably works fine. It's going to be good, it is...probably. Yes.
